25-year-old Lisa Theris was found naked on the side of the road in Alabama after being missing for a month. She was last seen driving down Highway 82 on July 18th. Judy Garner, the woman who found Theris, thought she was a deer at first sight, but then quickly realized she was a person in need of desperate help.
“I started shaking. I was crying, I was scared, and I didn’t know what to do,” Garner said. “So, I went over to her and asked her if she would stay there while I get water out of my van. She stayed, and I called 911 and told them I had found a girl on the road.”
Theris survived by eating berries, mushrooms and drinking muddy water. Over the course of the ordeal, she lost 50 pounds and has significant damage to her body. Doctors expect her to make a full recovery after a month or so of healing.
Theris told police that she ran off into the woods on July 18th after the two men she was with disclosed their plan to rob a hunting lodge. Being unfamiliar with the area, she became disoriented in the woods at night and quickly lost her bearings. According to police and Theris’ brother, there is a lot more to the story that is yet to come out to the public. Sherriff’s Sergeant Chad Faulkner said, “It’s going to be sad and heartwarming at the same time when the story is actually released. I’ve been doing this now going on 15 years and I’ve never seen anything like it. Her will to live is incredible.”
While we still don’t know the full extent of the details of Lisa Theris’ harrowing situation, I think we can all agree that this woman’s determination and survival skills are something to be highly commended.
