Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to six years in jail for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013. He has served just over a year of his sentence, but a judge decided that his sentence wasn’t long enough for the severity of the crime he committed and upped his sentence to at least 15 years behind bars.
Pistorius allegedly shot and killed his model girlfriend in his South African apartment. On the night that Steenkamp was killed, Pistorius has always alleged that she got up and went to the bathroom while he was sleeping; however, he did not hear her get out of bed. So, when he heard someone rummaging around in the bathroom, he believed it to be an intruder. He says that he called out to the intruder, but he got no answer. Ultimately, he decided to take matters into his own hands and he fired several bullets into the bathroom door thinking he was protecting himself and his girlfriend. When he opened the door, he realized he had made a horrible mistake and shot Steenkamp.
Prosecutors believe that Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp out of jealousy. They allege that he thought she was cheating on him and he decided that if he could not have her, no one could. Pistorius’ trial went on for months, and he was eventually convicted of manslaughter. His initial sentencing was a controversial one, with many people believing that he did not get the punishment he deserved.
It appears that enough people shared that sentiment over a year later and a judge has decided to reevaluate the sentencing. In the final statement about the decision to extend Pistorius’ sentence, the judge said that the original sentence was a disgrace to the memory of Reeva Steenkamp and that Pistorius has not shown one ounce of guilt or sorrow for what he did that fateful night.
Steenkamp’s family say though nothing will ever bring back their loved one, seeing the man who took her away from them facing the consequences he deserves does bring them some solace.
