When it comes to jail or prison life, only those who’ve been on the other side of the bars truly understand. It’s important for everyone to realize that being a prisoner changes a person, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.
Depending on the inmates and the facility itself, one may require protection from others. That protection typically required ‘favors’ of the… unmentionable variety. Sometimes people just want extra food.
Inmates who don’t really care what they’re charged with while incarcerated, will usually fashion their own weapons. The most common makeshift weapon in a prison or jail is a toothbrush with a sharpened end, though I imagine that with enough force, a blunt toothbrush would do the same thing.
Five inmates at Valley State Prison are accused of attacking three of the officers in charge of their block. The officers were all stabbed with improvised weapons, one suffering from serious blood loss before things were back under control. The officer who was seriously injured was rushed to the metro hospital in Modest, CA.
The inmates were all charged with assault on an officer, and conspiring to commit murder. Two inmates were already serving life sentences, but the other three had 5, 7, and 15 years to serve. It’s likely that a decade may be added to each inmate’s time, and the two serving life will be denied appeals for a long time.
There is a hospital in Fresno, but the one in Modesto is better equipped to handle serious life-threatening injuries.
According to the Warden, the offender who instigated the whole thing was sentenced to 1 week of isolation. It is unclear whether or not the prisoner will be allowed back into general population after his outburst.
People who have experienced prison have advice for people who will end up behind bars: “Butch up or bitch up.” Either you become the craziest person in there, or you become someone’s ‘special friend.’
My advice is don’t do something stupid enough to land in prison, then you won’t have to make a shiv.
