30-year-old Misty George and 38-year-old Michael Welch have been arrested for allegedly selling a mentally disabled woman as a prostitute online and forcing her to reside in a shed.
Reports share that authorities revealed that the victim suffered from both substantial mental and physical disabilities. She was reportedly forced out of the trailer she shared with George and Welch when she was unable to continue paying rent. They then placed her in an abandoned shed where she was forced to live for weeks.
Allegedly, the couple then began offering and selling the disabled woman’s sexual skills to customers online. The pair reportedly took payments from multiple customers so that they had free reign to sexually assault the victim however they pleased. The victim eventually informed her relatives about the abuse she was enduring and they notified the authorities.
Prosecutor Eric Smith spoke out on the situation by stating that the couple took full advantage of someone with special needs, instead of offering her their help and support. He shared that his heart goes out to the victim who was forced to submit to terrible acts and live in horrific conditions, but his brain can’t register how the cruel couple was capable of showing such abuse to an individual who was vulnerable and in need of their care.
Both George and Welch have been brought up on charges of human trafficking and accepting payment for prostitution. Misty George was also given a charge of committing a crime by utilizing a computer.
After the two suspects were arraigned, Michael Welch tried to escape while getting into a police vehicle. After a quick chase on foot, he was apprehended and arrested again. He now faces additional charges for his attempt to flee.
Both individuals are looking at extensive prison sentences if found guilty of their crimes.
