With the availability of internet on the go and numerous multiplayer online games being released in the market everyday, online gaming has become an integral part of our entertainment.
The one added advantage of online gaming is getting to know people of various ethnicities and cultures. This can be seen as a way of socialising for people who struggle to express themselves face to face. However, you should be careful about who you could meet on the other side of the gaming world.
Breck Bednar, a 14-year-old, English boy was a fan of the gaming sites as most of the children are these days and to add to his ecstasy, he met a friend who was just a geeky gamer like him or rather portrayed to be.
This faceless friend of his claimed that he was a 17-year-old technology obsessed individual who ran a multi-million gaming franchise. The friend was later identified to be Lewis Daynes, a 19-year-old boy from Essex.
Lewis groomed Breck for his own personal gains and eventually succeeded in luring him to his home in Essex. Lewis duct taped Breck, gagged him before sliting his throat and then to to top it all, he clicked pictures of his body and shared it on the gaming sites that the two guys played on.
Breck’s mother called him moment s before he was murdered but couldn’t make out that her child was in trouble and regrets it everyday. This crushed Breck’s family and his triplet siblings lost their eldest brother to this horrific incident.
The incident raises a question on how safe these gaming sites, designed particularly for vulnerable teenagers actually are. We would advise our readers to keep a close look at the games their children are playing and the people they meet online. The internet is lately being used as a hunting ground by disgusting paedophiles who are using it to lure innocent children into their traps.
