Police endured a six-hour long standoff with a man who was holding two children hostage inside an apartment. The incident ended with the two children, as well as their mother, being shot and killed. Now police are working to determine the motive for the entire situation.
Police were called to the apartment complex on Christmas Day after a woman was found dead in the parking lot. She had been shot by the alleged suspect. The suspect then made his way into her apartment where her two young children were. Authorities’ main goal was to try and recover the kids without anyone getting hurt.
Police attempted to negotiate with the man for six hours in order for him to release the children from the apartment. After many tireless hours and no compromise from the suspect, authorities discovered that he had already killed the youngest of the two children. Authorities then used a type of bomb to gain entrance into the apartment, which resulted in an exchange of shots between the suspect and police.
One officer was hit in the commotion, but is expected to be fine. The second child was unfortunately also dead when police were finally able to make their way into the apartment. They believe that both children may have been killed long before they arrived at the scene.
Officials have learned that the man was visiting the area for the holidays. He and the woman found in the parking lot were in a relationship together, although it has yet to be determined if that relationship was romantic in nature or just friendly.
Other people who also live in the apartment complex were forced to stay out of their homes for the entirety of the situation. Many of them have expressed their sudden fear about who they might be living near and what they may be capable of doing.
