Katherine Gonzalez, 24, has received a sentence of five years in jail after pleading guilty to molesting an 11-year-old victim.
The prior fifth grade educator informed officials that she decided to sexually assault the young boy because he was very sad and down and she wanted to brighten his spirits.
Gonzalez became familiar with the boy when he attended the Atlas Preparatory Academy where she was a fifth-grade teacher. When the pair were not in contact at school, they communicated with each other on various social media platforms.
The victim shared with authorities that in one incident Gonzalez collected him in her vehicle where they kissed, and she coerced the student to feel her private parts over her jeans. The two then proceeded to go to Gonzalez’s house, where they continued kissing and watched a film. Allegedly, Gonzalez touched the 11-year-old’s genitals and made him feel her breasts.
Police officers were alerted about the inappropriate relationship when the mother of the student hears his cell phone going off in the early morning hours on a school night. She later found communication from Katherine Gonzalez detailing the meetings, including alluding to being touched in personal places. The mother immediately contacted authorities, who took the boy in to hear his side of the story.
Once in custody, Gonzalez provided various excuses for her actions. She said she was worried her boyfriend wanted to get engaged, she claimed she wanted to help the student overcome his clinical depression and she even shared that she once experienced sexual assault herself.
Since being arrested, Katherine Gonzalez claims that she has been receiving help for her issues and that she is deeply sorry to the young boy and his family for the pain and torment she has caused them.
The judge who sentenced her to five years described her actions as predatory and unfathomable.
